Azure App Service

The original Azure product but not fully developed

Free Tier
medium high Complexity

Azure App Service has a checkered history. It was the original Windows-based PaaS as one of the first products of Azure and has grown out of that into being a fully-fledged PaaS. From a functionality point of view, it is close to Google App Engine but is still maintained and doesn’t feel abandoned. However, the developer experience of Azure App Service is similar to the rest of the Azure Platform: a bit clunky and complicated.

Pros

  • Well documented and with a wide range of features
  • Azure availability track record

Cons

  • Like the rest of the Azure Platform, it’s not very developer-friendly
  • It can get expensive quickly
  • The simplicity of App Service is reduced as you add more services like databases and storage to the mix.
